The Districts

The Districts Are Rumbling Through at WCL Oct. 11

Rob Grote expresses passionate conviction through his voice displaying a tone that comes from within. Nothing is held back as he consistently pushes his vocals developing a howling roar as steady-progress narratives dig deep at the soul. The instruments provide an ever-evolving musical setting as Grote explores the surroundings. The Districts can augment there sound in numerous ways, and this versatile approach allows for the incorporation of many influences rooted in heartfelt emotion and uncompromising raw playing. They take the exposed heartache and the sensibility of the blues and infuse it with rage and frustration of punk and grunge. At one moment, the story/song is simple Americana-style country-blues, but a storm is always brewing as guitars sweep through with reckless abandon and the rhythm section rumbles through like a thunderstorm. And to top it off, the band is still only in high school so I guess what I’m saying is watch out for these guys. You can take a listen to our former Featured Artist(s) Poll winner’s latest EP While you were in Honesdale HERE, and check out their HotBox Session below, which first caught our attention. World Café Live, 3025 Walnut St., 8pm, $12, All Ages - Michael Colavita

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: The Districts

We were instantly impressed when our friends at HotBox Studios shared with us a session that they did with The Districts. But then our minds were blown to learn that the band is made up of a bunch of high schoolers. We’re happy to see that they took advantage of their nomination in our Featured Artist(s) Poll, and we’re even happier to be able to give a fledgling band with obvious talent some deserved exposure. Check out the interview that we did with The Districts HERE during their lunch break - just kidding.

The Deli Philly's Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: The Districts

- by Alexis V.

Check out the interview that we did with The Districts (below) during their lunch break - just kidding.

The Deli: How did you start making music?

The Districts: We were friends from the beginning of high school and being musicians in a small town with similar tastes it just kind of fell together pretty naturally.

TD: Where did the name The Districts come from?

TDs: Well we were trying to choose between three names, but had our first show and just put down The Districts since we hadn't decided. And it happened to stick!

TD: What are your biggest musical influences?

TDs: Tom Waits, Usher, Rage, Neil Young, and some jazz guys like Django Reinhardt.

TD: What artists (local, national and/or international) are you currently listening to?

TDs: We're really into Timber Timbre, Slow Loris, Dr. Dog, Man Man, Alabama Shakes, and The Growlers to name a few!

TD: What's the first concert that you ever attended and first album that you ever bought?

Mark Larson: It was some female country singer with my mom, and Move Along - All American Rejects.

Rob Grote: Phish when I was a baby and got a bubble in my eye. Probably Aaron Carter or something bad like that.

Braden Lawrence: Nickelback…and it was probably Backstreet Boys or *NSYNC. I loved to groove.

Connor Jacobus: Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. I think it was probably Will Smith's epic Willennium.

TD: What do you love about Philly?

TDs: Big steaks, big steaks!

TD: What do you hate about Philly?

TDs: Trash, small steaks, parking.

TD: What are your plans for 2012?

TDs: Big steaks, continue making music in our underground survival bunker just in case - ya know?

TD: What was your most memorable live show?

TDs: Our first CD release show at this burrito shop, Senorita Burrita, in Lancaster for our first EP Kitchen Songs was a very memorable time.

TD: What's your favorite thing to get at the deli?

TDs: Italian sub with provolone cheese, banana peppers, oil and vinegar, salt and pepper, oregano, and if it is a high class establishment, pesto, surely.

Thanks for having us as band of the month!

New Video: “Funeral Beds” (HotBox Session) - The Districts

Check out this video of The Districts performing a song called “Funeral Beds.” We were recently turned on to them by our pals at South Philly’s HotBox Studios. The band hails from Lititz, PA, and its members are still navigating their way through their teenage years. We heard that a couple of them plan on going to college in Philly while their other members finish up high school in their hometown so keep a look out for The Districts performing in a venue near you. In the meantime, enjoy a session that they did with the HotBox crew which recently went viral. Enjoy!
