Tangiers

Weekend Warrior, May 19 - 21

This year’s Deli Philly Best Emerging Artist in Indie Rock, The Retinas, will headline a three-layered billing of Philly up-and-comers this Saturday at Ortlieb’s. Fuzzy, humid garage-punk permeates, as the loose, hazed-over relatability ricochets between the band and its audience. While employing a casual air, revealing lyricism invites you in. Then, those simmering, suburban storyboards reach a tipping point and scorch. Melding rubber-burning, fuzz-filtered fury with relaxed, melodic grooves, Tangiers zigzags the threshold of intensity, while relative newcomers, Lally, exhibit an inherently gritty, infectious batch of rock.

Also, this Sunday at the NoLibs watering hole, the adventurous psych/jazz guitar exploits of Nick Millevoi tear into the  underexplored, aided on the billing by the perception-altering, sonic-wanderings of Chicago trio Mako Sico and the ever-evolving, investigative musicality of Jeff Zeigler. – Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, November 25 - 27

Thanksgiving is a time for homecoming and festivities. And that's exactly what The Districts have in mind when they return to Philly for a little break from their fall tour. The hometown love is strong for the Lititz, PA transplants, so just one show might not be enough for their friends and fans this holiday weekend. Instead, they've setup a Trifecta of kick-ass, sold-out shows, with the help of some talented friends, that will be beginning this evening at Johnny Brenda’s. Tonight, the introspective beauty of Kississippi will be tugging at the heartstrings, after a dramatic, oddly spooky performance from Baltimore’s Albert Bagman. On Saturday, you’ll find The Districts joined by buzzworthy Philly newcomers Tangiers and The Dove & The Wolf. And finally, the Fat Possum artists will be hosting a very rare, all-ages show at JB’s on Sunday that also features alt-rockers Mumblr, who will be happily returning home from their own big tour. Johnny Brenda's, 1201. N Frankford Ave., 9pm (7pm - Sunday), SOLD OUT, 21+ (All Ages - Sunday) (Photo by Sarah Rudderow) - Bill McThrill

New Tangiers/Straw Hats Split EP Available for Streaming & Download

Over the weekend, local outfits Tangiers and Straw Hats issued a split EP, Is This Split. Tangiers occupy the first half of the album the chilled-out groover "Home Invasion," the blistering "Hey Mama," and the casually intense "Marijuana USA," while Straw Hats grab the reins, weaving grunge grit with a fun twist on  "Salmon," "Neighborhood Watch," and "Drones." It’s a mesh of light and heavy that meets somewhere in the middle.

Embrace the Fuzz w/Tangiers at Petting Zoo March 3

Fuzzed-out, lo-fi melodic rockers Tangiers perform tonight at the Petting Zoo. The quartet brings a decidedly up-tempo, percussion-driven sound with vocals delivered through a cosmic membrane and instrumentation that retains unapologetic dirt-under-the-fingernails authenticity, taking the time to methodically develop a punchy groove before zooming off into space. While you’re out there, you might as well catch the eclectic psych-garage escapades of Time Hitler and the Assholes From Space, because that crew is prepared to push whatever buttons will get the job done along its twisted trek. The lineup is rounded out by a pair of trios - local psych-punk combo Seismic Thrust and the foot-to-the-floor, face-smacking garage rock of Georgia’s Concord America. The Petting Zoo (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 8pm, $5, All Ages - Michael Colavita
